Sergeant Chuck Vessey, right, presents Doug Abernethy
President of Orillia Against Drunk Driving with the Award
of Excellence for Fighting Crime with Mayor Ron
Stevens. Doug Abernethy, whose 15-year-old
brother Tim, was killed by a drunk driver, was recognized
for his persistence in persuading Ontario to introduce the
alcohol ignition interlock device. Inspector James R.
Dixon of the Ontario Provincial Police made the nomination
to the Ontario Crime Control Commission for Doug
Abernethy's work in getting the interlock used in Ontario,
and for his efforts with various anti-drinking driving
campaigns. The presentation was made on July
15th 2002, at Orillia City Council. In receiving the award
Doug said " It is a great honor to receive this
award, and most importantly "The alcohol
ignition interlock will greatly impact the drinking and
driving problem in Ontario." "We have all seen
the devastating toll of destruction drunk drivers have
unleashed on our roads." "The countless
number of victims that have been seriously injured and
killed in twisted crashes caused by people who persist in
driving after they have been drinking is
heartbreaking."--Doug Abernethy
